David Beckham Campaigns Against Knives

by Erin on August 19th, 2008

David Beckham and his family are currently in London and, boy, is he ever keeping busy! When he’s not training with the English team, taking Victoria out to dinner or celebrating his dad’s birthday, David is trying to make the world a better place.

On August 18, David, along with English football stars Rio Ferdinand and David James, participated in a press conference for the government program It Doesn’t Have to Happen, a program designed to highlight the consequences of knife violence.

This is a project that is very close to David’s heart. When he was 13 years old, a friend’s older brother was attacked with a knife and was left paralyzed when he tried to break up a fight he saw on the street.

“No one wants to see the devastation I saw my friend and his family go through. We have to lend our support to this campaign. You don’t expect situations that are happening whereby people go to school in the morning and then you never see them again because of incidents that have happened,” David told reporters at the event. “We have got to help. We have got a voice that kids listen to so it is important we get involved in something like this.”

Below is a video of David speaking at the press conference.

I think it’s great that David is getting involved in an issue so close to his heart. Needless violence is a devastating thing that can ruin families and people’s lives.
