David Beckham to Star in Panasonic Campaign
David Beckham and three other MLS stars, Cuauhtemoc Blanco of the Chicago Fire, Davino of FC Dallas, and Juan Pablo Angel of the New York Red Bulls, will be featured in a Panasonic campaign that will be launched in Best Buy this week.
The campaign will be entirely in Spanish and it’s slogan is “Panasonic Viera HDTV. El Futbol llega al alma pero entra por los ojos,” meaning “Soccer reaches the soul but enters through the eyes,” according to Brand Week. The campaign will target 400 Best Buys in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston.
I haven’t seen any photos of the campaign yet, but I’m excited too! However, concerns have been raised that while this campaign is targeted at the Hispanic community, why is David the only non-Hispanic soccer player in the ad.
David “is an international star who crosses ethnic lines,” said David Wright, who is VP of marketing for the MLS. “And, of course, Blanco, Davino and Angel are major stars in the Hispanic community.”
I don’t think anything was intended by it, they were just going for the most recognizable faces. However, do you think they should have been more aware of how the ad would be perceived? Or are it’s critics just looking for a fight?
