David Beckham Left Off English Squad
David Beckham was left off the English squad last week–and missed getting his 100th cap–when coach Fabio Capello felt David wasn’t ready to return to competitive play for England.
“I know there has been a lot of discussion about David Beckham,” Capello said. “The reason that David is not in the squad is because he has not had any real match practice since playing in November.”
“When I spoke with David on the phone [Wednesday], I advised him that he is still part of my plans, and once he is playing regularly in America we will look closely at him again.”
Should David play for England one more time, he will become the fifth player to make 100 appearances or more for England.
I think Capello is being cautious and this decision is no way a reflection of David’s ability as a player. Maybe after the 2008 MLS season, once David is injury-free and playing regularly again, we’ll see him don the English uniform one more time!
England will play Switzerland later today!
