Eric Harrison Talks about David Beckham

by Erin on September 8th, 2007

david beckham knee injuryEric Harrison, a former Manchester United coach was interviewed about David for DavidBeckham.com.

I really enjoyed it — Eric shares his thoughts and feelings on David’s past and future in soccer.

What were your first impressions of David Beckham?

Well, to be honest, at a very young age he was an amazing talent and the thing that hit me first was his ability to hit long passes and to strike long shots at goal. For a small, skinny kid he had that amazing ability to manipulate and certainly strike a football - that was my first impression. Also, he was a kid who worked so hard, he really did, so we put the two together and saw that even at a young age he was a very exciting prospect.

David has often said that ideally, he’d like to play in the centre of midfield, despite playing on the right for most of his career. Which position do you think is David’s best?

It’s a difficult question. In terms of seeing more of the ball and having the ball at his feet, centre-midfield without a doubt, because when you play out wide you’re relying on players to win the ball and give it to you. There are a lot of people that disagree with me, but I think he’s better in centre midfield. He’ll score more goals in centre midfield. Out wide, he will make more goals, so which is the most important? I like him with the ball at his feet, which he’ll have more in centre midfield and I played him there an awful lot.

Do you think David will be great success in the US from a football perspective?

Well, I do because having worked with him for so long and knowing him for so long, I know what his enthusiasm for the game is like. When he says he’s going to do something, he does it. It’ll be difficult for him, especially with the travelling, but if he’s asked to go wherever, he’ll do it. I’ve spoken to him at length about it and he says he genuinely wants to improve the standard and he wants to get more kids playing football. He’s a determined young man is David, and when he says he’s going to do something, he will do it.

I hope Eric is right!
